Cultural Humility and Trauma-Informed Care

CBMT Approved, 5 CMTE.

Cultural humility is an essential component of trauma-informed care. In this hybrid course, learners will grow in their understanding of and engagement with cultural humility.  Asynchronous work includes watching videos, reading and written reflection to orient to the topic.  Content includes engaging with the instructors' conversations and arts-based creative experiences to deepen understanding.

Objectives

  • Participants will identify aspects of their identity (V.B.11).
  • Participants will define cultural humility and its relationship to ethical, trauma-informed care (V.B.2).
  • Participants will create a personal and cultural timeline to better understand their own identity and those of their clients (III. A. 1.f).

Prerequisites: None, Other TIMT Certificate Courses Suggested.

Instructors:

Natasha Thomas, PhD, MT-BC (They/She) is a Black, Queer, Disabled child of Caribbean immigrants, and “descendant of shipwreck and volcano,” living and working across multiple Indigenous lands. A Community Worker, Music Therapist & Educator, she teaches and researches at Indiana University and is founder/co-curator of the Black Creative Healing project.

Valerie Blanc PhD, LMHC, BC-DMT, CMA (She/Her) is an assistant professor at Lesley University in the Expressive Therapies program where she coordinates the dance/movement therapy specialization. Her research focuses on pedagogy and educational theory in dance/movement therapy including hybrid and online teaching. Her private practice specializes in embodied play with children and families.

Adenike Webb, PhD, MT-BC (she/her) has been a board-certified music therapist for 21 years. Her clinical work has been primarily in behavioral/ mental health settings. She is a member of the music therapy faculty and the clinical education coordinator for the Creative Arts Therapies department of Drexel University. Her scholarly and educational efforts focus on supporting the development of cultural awareness and sensitivity in music therapy practice and education. She is co-curator of the Black Creative Healing project.

Course Schedule

Module 1: Introduction and Reflection (25 minutes).

Module 2: Grounding Experience and Reflection (30 minutes).

Module 3: Cultural Humility: People, Principles and Practices. Participants will watch videos, read and engage with content about lifelong learning, critical self-awareness and recognizing power imbalances/institutional accountability.
(75 minutes).

Module 4: Read and engage with supplemental material (60 minutes).

Module 5: Concluding Conversation and Future Reflection (60 minutes)
