Vicarious Trauma and Its Path Toward Resilience

Through asynchronous engagement with readings, instructor videos and personal reflection, you will increase your understanding of vicarious trauma and how it impacts your work and wellbeing.  Develop a plan to respond to your own needs using the vicarious resilience framework and consider how you can contribute to a more trauma-informed and trauma-responsive environment in your workplace.

Objectives with CBMT Domains

  • Participants will be able to describe elements of vicarious trauma and vicarious resilience and identify how they impact professional caregivers (CBMT V.A.2).

  • Participants will develop a plan for individual-level response to their own vicarious trauma, using the vicarious resilience framework (CBMT V.A.1; V.B.12).

  • Participants will appraise their work settings for opportunities to incorporate a more trauma-informed practices and cultivate a trauma-responsive environment (CBMT V.B.4, V.B.9).

    Prerequisites: None, TIMT 1-4 recommended.

    Heather Wagner, PhD, MT-BC is a music therapy educator, clinician, and supervisor with over 25 years of experience. She is an assistant professor and coordinator of the music therapy program at Southern Connecticut State University. She has extensive clinical experience with children and adults in medical, rehabilitation, and mental health settings, focusing on integrative approach to health and recovery. Heather is a fellow of the Association for Music and Imagery and is a GIM trainer.

Module 1: Pre-work: reading and written reflection (60 minutes).

Module 2: Vicarious trauma. Video and written and experiential reflection (40 minutes).

Module 3: Resilience and vicarious resilience. Written and experiential reflection (50 minutes).

Module 4: Strategies to strengthen therapist resilience and developing a plan for ongoing professional well-being. Written and experiential reflection (50 minutes). 

Module 5: Post-work: follow-up reading and written reflection (50 minutes).
