Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Practice Seminar

Asynchronous. 5 CMTE.

Instructors: Jennifer Sokira and Dena Register. 

To be a trauma-informed music therapist, one must be on a path of reflection, growth, compassion and self-compassion. In this culminating seminar, students will participate in asynchronous experiences geared towards professional sustainability within a realistic framework for clinical work and career planning. Through lecture, experientials and reflection, participants will chart a course for their career moving forward as a trauma-informed music therapist.

Objectives

Participants will reflect on and document strengths and opportunities related to clinical practice, personal development and desired growth (CBMT V. A.1)

Participants will review, reflect on and apply principles of current research related to trauma-informed practice, music therapy and sustainability as related to their area(s) of practice. (CBMT V. A.2)

Participants will create music-based reflections and experiences demonstrating the intersectionality of music and trauma informed practice. (CBMT V. A.6)

Prerequisites: None, TIMT 1-5 recommended.

Biographies

Jennifer Sokira, MMT, LCAT, MT-BC is Founding Director of Connecticut Music Therapy Services, LLC and Director of Educational Programming at Enlighten CE. She is on faculty at Alverno College, Southern Connecticut State University and Quinnipiac University.  Her primary clinical and professional interests include trauma-informed music therapy, disaster response, and ethics.    

Dena Register PhD, MT-BC is a seasoned music therapy clinician, educator and program development specialist who has provided services to individuals & groups with very diverse backgrounds and served in multiple clinical, supervisory, academic and regulatory roles. A 2009 Fulbright Scholar, Dena remains closely involved with the development of music therapy academic and clinical programming at Mahidol University College of Music in Thailand. As a Chopra certified meditation teacher, she leads meditation and sound healing practices at the Chopra mind-body zone in Orlando, Florida

Course Schedule

Module 1: Identifying your strengths and resources for sustainable practice.  Video, reading and written/musical reflection (50 minutes). 

Module 2: Boundaries and Verbal Skills in Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Practice.  Video and written and experiential reflection (50 minutes).

Module 3: Mental Health First Aid and Suicide Prevention.  Video and written and experiential reflection and community resource list creation (100 minutes).

Module 4: Mindfulness in our Sustainability. Video and written and experiential reflection (50 minutes). Video with current research and practice related to mindfulness, meditation and sound as related to personal reflection and clinical practice, Participants complete reflections and engage in mindfulness exercises.
