Full Certificate in Trauma-Informed Music Therapy (50 CMTE)

This package provides two-year access to 50 CMTE credits. Upon completion of all included courses, you will be awarded the Certificate in Trauma-Informed Music Therapy. Each 5-credit course is completed individually. Please note that TIMT-9 and TIMT-10 are currently pending CBMT approval.

Trauma-Informed: Understanding Neurobiology, Symptoms and Trauma Responses (TIMT-1)

ASYNCHRONOUS. Instructor: Jennifer Sokira. Trauma and adversity are unfortunately common across settings and clients of music therapy.  Despite the clinical setting or level of practice, trauma should be a consideration in your music therapy practice.  In this 5 CMTE hybrid/online course, participants will be introduced to the neurobiology of trauma and learn to identify signs and symptoms of trauma.  Definitions of trauma, trauma-informed care, as well as types of trauma will be covered.

Principles of Trauma-Informed Care for Music Therapists (TIMT-2)

ASYNCHRONOUS. Instructor: Jennifer Sokira. To be trauma-informed, music therapists must have a strong working knowledge of SAMHSAā€™s 6 Principles of Trauma-Informed Care and concrete strategies for implementing these principles into their clinical work and professional systems. In this 5 CMTE asynchronous course, participants will be introduced to each of the 6 Principles of Trauma-Informed Care and encouraged to apply them to their own clinical work and work settings.  Through video and interactive journaling, participants will reflect on each principle and create an implementation plan.

Ethical Dilemmas in Trauma-Informed Music Therapy (TIMT-3)

ASYNCHRONOUS. 5 CMTE- 5 ETHICS CMTE. Instructor: Jennifer Sokira. Trauma is a significant and prevalent consideration for music therapists in all clinical settings.  This 5 credit CMTE will provide a brief introduction to trauma and trauma-informed care, as well as to ethical thinking and decision making.  From this framework, asynchronous participants will reflect on various fictional ethical dilemmas ethical dilemmas which have significant connection to clientsā€™ trauma experiences and responses, including areas relating to systemic oppression, professional and personal competence and danger and harm. Using guided journaling prompts, participants will also reflect on dilemmas that have arisen for them in their clinical work related to trauma-informed care.

Cultural Humility and Trauma-Informed Care (TIMT-4)

ASYNCHRONOUS. 5 CMTE.  Instructors: Natasha Thomas, Adenike Webb and Valerie Blanc.  Cultural humility is an essential component of trauma-informed care. In this hybrid course, learners will grow in their understanding of and engagement with cultural humility. Work includes watching videos, reading and written reflection to orient to the topic.  The second portion will includes engaging with the instructors' conversation and arts-based creative experiences to deepen understanding.

Vicarious Trauma and Its Path Toward Resilience (TIMT-5)

Asynchronous. 5 CMTE. Instructor: Heather Wagner. Through asynchronous engagement with readings, instructor videos and personal reflection, you will increase your understanding of vicarious trauma and how it impacts your work and wellbeing.  Develop a plan to respond to your own needs using the vicarious resilience framework and consider how you can contribute to a more trauma-informed and trauma-responsive environment in your workplace.

Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Practice Seminar (TIMT-6)

Asynchronous. 5 CMTE. Instructors: Jennifer Sokira and Dena Register.  To be a trauma-informed music therapist, one must be on a path of reflection, growth, compassion and self-compassion. In this culminating seminar, students will participate in asynchronous experiences geared towards professional sustainability within a realistic framework for clinical work and career planning. Through lecture, experientials and reflection, participants will chart a course for their career moving forward as a trauma-informed music therapist.

Developing Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Experiences: Part 1 (TIMT-7)

Asynchronous. 5 CMTE. Instructors: Jennifer Sokira and Dena Register.  This course focuses on providing integration of knowledge of trauma and trauma-informed practice into clinical music therapy interventions using multiple music therapy methods. Participants will develop trauma-informed clinical thinking and decision making, leading to music experience development that is rooted in trauma-informed principles, avoiding re-traumatization and harm.

Developing Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Experiences Part 2 (TIMT-8)

Asynchronous.  5 CMTE. Instructors: Dena Register and Jennifer Sokira.  This course builds on Developing Trauma-Informed Music Therapy Experiences, Part 1 by providing opportunities for participants to practice developing trauma-informed music therapy experiences relevant to creating a physiologically safe environment for multiple clinical scenarios. Considerations for client and therapist relationship and self-care will be incorporated.

Instructor: Jennifer Sokira This course examines the intersections of systemic trauma with social, economic, and environmental conditions that influence health and well-being. Participants explore the impact of structural violence, ACES/PACES (Adverse and Positive Childhood Experiences), and community-wide traumaā€”including natural and human-made disastersā€”on individuals and populations. Participants will explore the role of music therapy within this complex framework.

Instructor: Jennifer Sokira with Guests Music Therapy Models for Trauma Therapy (TIMT-10) is a 5-credit course that explores advanced music therapy approaches used in trauma-focused clinical work. Through the instructor's interviews with practitioners in various modalities, participants will examine the theoretical foundations, clinical applications, and training pathways for models including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Analytical Music Therapy (AMT), the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM), and Austin Vocal Psychotherapy. Emphasis is placed on ethical integration, scope of practice, and identifying appropriate next steps for specialized, trauma-focused training.
